Last time we heralded in Summer by recognizing Memorial Day. Now that June has arrived we are seeing more flowers decorating our neighbor’s front porches, the sound of lawnmowers whirring more often, the scent of lilacs and warm pines, and the delectable taste of summer fruits delighting our palates. We see and hear children playing as they are released from their academic rigors for the Summer and adults scramble for plans on how to keep their little charges constructively occupied during these months off from school.
Another day of honor is Fathers’ Day. According to Wikipedia:
Father’s Day was founded in Spokane, Washington at the YMCA in 1910 by Sonora Smart Dodd, who was born in Arkansas. Its first celebration was in the Spokane YMCA on June 19, 1910. Her father, the Civil War veteran William Jackson Smart, was a single parent who raised his six children there.
Like Mothers’ Day, Fathers’ Day is a day to honor those who are fathers and father-figures in our lives. We can best do that by spending time with them. Children can bring them little handmade gifts like cards and cookies, and do things like polish shoes or water flowers. But most of all our parents just want us to be near. Be near to the father in your life. Tell him how special he is and how much you love him. Both of you will feel very good.
Until next time,
Lorraine
