What’s a Child to do During Summer?

Child Development

13 Jul

Summer’s here and your child is on the move- what can you do? Even though it’s warm outside (and in some places, down right hot) children are still physically active and still need outlets for movement! If you are fortunate enough to live near the coast or the shores of a lake, water play is the ultimate favorite. ( Just remember to protect yourself and your little one with a sun guard of at least SPF 30 or higher for your child and SPF 15 or higher for adults.) If you live inland near mountains, a mountain escape provides relief from the heat. An easy trail for a cool mountain hike can be exhilarating for children with lots of nature to explore.

Nature is so healthy for young children and I fear that our children these days do not receive near enough nature for their own well-being. Nature is the perfect backdrop for getting physical activity, it can be as inexpensive as you choose and there are a myriad of activities to choose from! There’s swimming, hiking, biking, boating, fishing … all can easily be adapted to include children.

Having a “stay-cation” at home? Build some fun and exciting water play sprinklers adapted from pvc pipe for your children to romp and play in. Here are some ideas to get you going:

No matter what activities you choose for yourself and your family, spending time together as a family is always a winning play! When my brother and I were growing up, our family did a lot of camping during the summer. There were lots of small trails nearby for my brother and I to explore- always under the watchful eye of our parents. When we were at home, we had lots of other physical activities available as well: riding our bicycles, roller skating, and swimming lessons. We lived in Southern California so beach excursions were quite common- at least once or twice a week. As I grew into an adult and had children of my own, my husband and I introduced them to the activities that we loved and enjoyed when we were children. We lived overseas (stationed with the Air Force in Europe) so our children also experienced activities that families from other countries enjoyed such as Volksmarching (organized hikes) and swimming in the Hallenbads (indoor pools) in Germany. Because we played as a family, we have enduring bonds as a family.

So whether you are taking a traditional summer vacation away from home, or; staying home this summer, include some active play for yourselves and your children. Your whole body, mind, and spirit will be so glad you did!

Until next time-

Lorraine
