Summer Science Spectacular!

Cognitive Development

21 Jul

What could make Summer more spectacular than dazzling your children with magic shows? Well, it’s not really magic- it’s science!

Children are amazed at how how cream, sugar, and vanilla, when chilled, becomes ice cream. They are also equally amazed when a homemade volcano can spew “lava” from simple baking soda and vinegar.

You don’t have to be a science wizard! Just look at Laura’s ice cream in a bag activity at https://www.lauracandler.com/files/science/general/ and Amy’s Ice Cream in a Bag activity at https://www.theidearoom.net/make-ice-cream-in-a-bag/

Maybe your child enjoys a more explosive blast of a project! Summer volcano experiments are great! You can make one of clay or you can make one out of sand just like Crystal and her family did at https://www.growingajeweledrose.com/2014/04/sand-volcano-fun-for-kids.html?m=1

Children will want to repeat the volcano action again and again! You can also make colorful versions like Alice and her family did at https://newyoungmum.com/homemade-colour-volcanoes-preschool-science-experiment/

Whatever science activity you choose, you can make it perfect by doing it as a family! One important thing to remember: let your child do as much of the activity as is safe and age appropriate.

Let them experiment with wide and narrow opening containers for their volcanoes (Hint: protect furniture when using narrow opening containers.)

Use mentos and pop-rock candies in vinegar and watch their effects. As a warning, and most people probably know this, do not let children put these ingredients together in their mouths!

Thanks for reading and I hope you have a super good time with your summer science spectacular!

Until next time-

Lorraine
